Shifting the Lenses

“By destigmatizing homelessness, we empower people to hold their heads high, regardless of society's perceptions. They possess their unique identities, value, purpose, and, most importantly, their intrinsic worth.”

— Vernetta, Division Director

During my time at Mental Health Partnerships, I've gained a deeper understanding of both the individuals we serve and my own mental health journey. My personal journey began in 2013 with the grieving process following my son's tragic murder. This traumatic loss served as a catalyst for further challenges, including depression. It compelled me to confront previously unaddressed issues stemming from other adversities I had encountered in my life.

My tenure at Mental Health Partnerships has allowed me to confront these issues head-on while assisting people who've undergone similar traumas. This experience has encouraged me to be more honest and transparent with myself, ultimately aiding others on their own paths.

One memorable interaction involved a young man, around 22 or 23, who I began working with when I first started at Mental Health Partnerships. His experience of homelessness intrigued me, and as we spoke, tears welled up in his eyes. He shared his story of incarceration and his determination to rebuild his life for the sake of his children. Together, we embarked on a journey of transformation. He attended wellness recovery groups and took ownership of his recovery. We equipped him with tools for survival and provided resources for employment, education, and literacy.

One day, he walked in with an undeniable glow, announcing that he had secured a job, and his employer even provided housing as long as he stayed with the company. I felt true and genuine joy for his accomplishments. Although we discharged him as a participant, he continues to visit, sharing his story and updates on his success.

Our approach hinges on tearing down the stigma surrounding homelessness. It begins with recognizing the inherent humanity in every individual, regardless of their circumstances. We refrain from labeling people as homeless or using their situation as a moral gauge. Instead, we view it as a temporary condition. By destigmatizing homelessness, we empower people to hold their heads high, regardless of society's perceptions. They possess their unique identities, value, purpose, and, most importantly, their intrinsic worth.

This experience has encouraged me to be more honest and transparent with myself, ultimately aiding others on their own paths.
