Representation Where it Matters

I’ve found myself in a special position to help people. I speak Spanish and English and am a beautiful and proud combination of White, Black, Latino, Indigenous, and Southeast Asian… It is rewarding to bridge who I am and the passion I have for helping those on their mental health journeys.”

— Luis, Certified Peer Specialist

I started my journey with Mental Health Partnerships when I received a scholarship for the Certified Peer Specialist training. Following the completion of the CPS course, I had the privilege of participating in the practicum program under the guidance of the wonderful and caring Denise Sherman. My time here has been so inspiring and I really wanted to pay it forward. I am excited and honored to have recently joined the staff, where I now work on the chatline and serve as a virtual resource for those in need. I love assisting individuals in their recovery and wellness journey, whether it's connecting them with therapists, psychiatrists, support groups, or any other necessary resources.

The practicum experience was very special. Denise's exceptional mentorship equipped us with the essential skills needed to navigate the professional world. From working on interview skills to building individualized plans for assistance, every aspect of professional life was covered. The whole process was very eye-opening, there are things that other people know and seem like common sense that I just didn’t know, such as more efficient methods, open-ended communication, affirmations, and the art of reflective listening. As peers, we are trained to coach individuals rather than instruct them.

Inspired and supported by my experiences, I made the decision to further my education. I have recently started my studies at the Community College of Philadelphia, where my goal is to earn an associate's degree in applied science within the behavioral health field.

I love being able to help people move forward in their recovery and wellness journey.
