My Connection with the Friends Connection and the Alumni Program

Ed Pasco, TFC Alumni President

During my time as a Friends Connection program participant, my Peer Support Counselor accompanied me to AA meetings and helped me make time to do other positive things, so I wouldn't drink and drug. He introduced me to a sober way of life. We did lots of things together, such as, going to the movies, bowling, playing pool, attending baseball games, and other productive activities. I really enjoyed myself at these events and I was involved for a couple of years. Then I was introduced to the Alumni, where we are more self-supporting. We have fund raisers and plan our own group activities. We go to some activities with donations of tickets from Art Reach or we just plan something and do it. I am the President of the Alumni now and I like it. It gives me a sense of pride that I am a big part of a whole. Now I help support other Alumni members stay clean and sober and I also get support from them. I strongly recommend checking out TFC Alumni upon attaining all your goals and completing the Friends Connection program.

From the Desk of the Alumni Coordinator

The Friends Connection Alumni program supports past program participants as they continue to develop a more independent living status. Our members have grown in numbers and strength, taking on more responsibilities and having a wealth of fun.

We meet on a monthly basis [the first Friday of each month] and after the meeting , the members attend an event such as, a play, concert, sports activity or just socialize with each other at places like South Street, Old City, and the Downtown Gallery.

As a fund raising activity, the Alumni group provides the refreshments sold at the Friends Connection dances each month. Through our fund raising efforts this year, we have had the opportunity to take a luncheon cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia, take a trip to Atlantic City to stroll the boardwalk, and hold our annual Alumni picnic at Penn Treaty Park.

We ended the year 2000 by celebrating Thanksgiving together at an alumni member's home and a holiday event on Three Kings Day. We are looking forward to another exciting year of socializing and being a recovery support for each other. We plan to continue sponsoring Alumni group trips to places like Great Adventure, Wildwood and Hershey Park. We encourage all past Friends Connection program participants to get involved with the Alumni.
