Resource For Parents / Guardians |
FamiliesFree Consultation For Philadelphia Kids And Their FamiliesKids and their family members can talk confidentially by phone or in face-to-face appointments with our clinical staff who can age appropriately answer their questions and address their concerns about coping with mental illness in the family. Consultations usually last up to an hour and can be ongoing on an as-needed basis. Educational videos and handouts are often used as teaching tools. Staff will make referrals for therapy or medication if additional clinical intervention is indicated. Children under fourteen must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or have written consent of a parent or legal guardian before receiving this service. Workshops For Kids And Their Parents Or CaregiversKids may not feel free to share their personal situations during educational programs in schools, so we are also offering a six-week community workshop for kids ages 7-10. A workshop for kids ages 10-13 will soon be available. Educational support groups for teens, ages 14 to 17, will also be offered if six or more teens express interest in such a group. Workshops for 7- to 10-year olds consist of six weekly meetings at a convenient community location from 6 to 8 PM (dinner included), with the actual program starting at 6:45 to accommodate working parents. Three sessions of the workshops include parents/caregivers and kids meeting together. The other three sessions involve kids meeting separately from parents and caregivers. Parents or caregivers of child participants are strongly encouraged to attend, and participants must have consent of a parent or legal guardian to attend if their parents or caregivers cannot attend. All activities and videos are centered around helping children talk with peers about stress in their lives and how to cope with it effectively, including the stress of mental illness and substance abuse in the family. The optimal size of these workshops is six to eight children and their parents or caregivers. We offer separate workshops for kids with a parent or caregiver who has a mental illness and kids whose sibling has a mental illness or behavioral/emotional disorder because the issues are different. Special Workshops For Kids In Foster Care Or Juvenile JusticeKids who have entered the foster care or juvenile justice system may also benefit from workshops and support groups mentioned above for kids, 7-10, 11-13, and 14-17, and adapted to their additional needs for support in coping with being in foster care or the juvenile justice system. For more information about participating in or scheduling a workshop for your group, contact: Edie Mannion, Director This page last updated: December 2, 2000. |
