Systems Advocacy at MHASP
MHASP advocates are involved in systems advocacy by working to make changes at the local, state and federal levels that affect people with mental illnesses.
Traditionally, MHASP has done much of this work through its office of Policy Development. This office continues to work to educate local, state and federal officials about the need for appropriate mental health programs and support services in the community. It also works with other interested organizations to create a unified voice that can advocate effectively on mental health issues.
Increasingly, however, MHASP has also begun to use public policy initiatives to address the needs of specific populations, including children and their families, adults and the elderly.
